Portland Winterhawks Information
The Portland Winterhawks are a junior ice hockey team from Portland, Oregon. They play in the WHL, one of the three groups comprising the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Moda Center, which the Winterhawks shared with the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, were the alternate sites for home games before the 2021-22 season.
The current Edmonton Winterhawks were first established in 1950 with that name. It was on June 11, 1976, when the franchise relocated to Portland. Brian C. Shaw, the team's owner, cited low attendance in Edmonton and a far cheaper stadium agreement in Portland as reasons for the transfer.
The Winterhawks revealed their rebranding and logo change from the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League to a "Winterhawk" on July 14, 2021. In rebranding, the Winterhawks organization collaborated with Portland Gear, a local apparel manufacturer, to develop new main and secondary logos and a word mark.
As of January 1, 2021, the Portland Winterhawks franchise will be owned by Winterhawks Sports Group (WSG) under the approval of the WHL Board of Governors. The team's ownership announced the Winterhawks' permanent move back to Veterans Memorial Coliseum before the 2021-22 WHL season began.
