Old Dominion Monarchs Football Information
The Monarchs represent Old Dominion University. In 1930, the William & Mary student body formed the first edition of the team, known as the Norfolk Division Braves. The Monarchs team has been around since 2009, when they played as an FCS independent.
They began competing in league games in 2011 after entering the Colonial Athletic Association and remained there until 2014 when they moved to League USA in the FBS. In 2022, the team became a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
Major modifications were made for the 2022 season. In July of that year, the Monarchs, across all sports, left Conference USA for the Sun Belt Conference, joining Southern Miss and Marshall. Starting with a 20-17 victory over Virginia Tech, ODU would cause quite the upset. The Monarchs' season went downhill from there, as they ended up with a 3-9 record.
The Old Dominion Monarchs and James Madison Dukes, in-state rivals, declared the start of their "Royal Rivalry" on October 26, 2022. Since both schools are located in the Commonwealth of Virginia and are members of the Sun Belt Conference, they will compete for an all-sports trophy with a royal theme that incorporates football.
