The men's ice hockey program at Ohio State University debuted in 1963, and the Ohio State Ice Rink, built in 1961, served as the team's home arena. In 1971, the Buckeyes joined the CCHA as a founding member. The Buckeyes won the 1972 CCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament with a 3-0 victory against Saint Louis University.
The 1997–1998 season was a banner for the Buckeyes, the year before they moved from the antiquated and inadequate (1,400-seat) Ohio State Ice Rink to the brand-new (17,500-seat) Value City Arena.
Ohio State's performance in the first Big Ten Hockey tournament was respectable despite the team's erratic 2013–14 season. The Buckeyes advanced over Michigan State in the first round before falling to #1 Minnesota, 3-1. Ultimately, the Wisconsin Badgers prevailed 5-4 in overtime as the champs. Ohio State finished the 2013–14 season ranked no. 20, even though they did not make it to the NCAA tournament.
Ohio State's third-place Big Ten performance was its best in the league's four-year existence. Despite the Buckeyes' outstanding season, Penn State's 2017 Big Ten tournament victory against Wisconsin granted Ohio State the lone at-large spot and the fourth seed in the West Regional in Fargo, North Dakota.
