The North Dakota State Bison football team participates in college football at the DI Football Championship Subdivision level for North Dakota State University. It is a Missouri Valley Football Conference member. The Bison play their home games in the 19,000-capacity Fargodome.
The Bison have earned 37 conference titles and 17 national titles. Between 2011 and 2021, they have won nine NCAA Division I AA FCS National Championships. With five titles between 2011 and 2015 for Division I FCS, the Bison holds the most overall NCAA national championships and the most consecutive championships.
The Bison took against the Montana State Bobcats for the FCS title on January 8, 2022. FB Hunter Luepke rushed for three touchdowns in the first half, keying a 38-10 victory. The NCAA Division I Football Championship Game 2023 was played on January 8, and the Bison lost to South Dakota State, 21-45.
The loss marked North Dakota State's first in a Division I title game and only their third overall. On October 15, 2023, the Bison suffered their worst defeat in Division I FCS play. The Bison were defeated by the Fighting Hawks of the University of North Dakota, 49-24.
