The North Dakota Fighting Hawks (previously the Flickertails and Fighting Sioux) are the sporting teams that represent the University of North Dakota (UND), which is situated in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Members of the Summit League and the Fighting Hawks compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level. North Dakota is most well-known for its American Football and Ice Hockey squads, which are among 17 varsity teams.
Originally members of the Division II North Central Conference, UND started switching to NCAA's Division I in 2008 with the football team competing in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). For most sports, North Dakota is a member of the Summit League; in football, it is a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference; in men's hockey, it is a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Easily the best-known of UND teams, the men's hockey team boasts eight national titles. Playing at the $100+ million Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Fighting Hawks are founder members of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
