Regarding collegiate football, the University of Nevada, Reno (just "Nevada" in athletics parlance) is represented by the Nevada Wolf Pack. The Wolf Pack is an NCAA Division I football team that plays in the Mountain West Conference. It began on October 24, 1896, in Reno, Nevada, under the name Sagebrushers.
Mackay Stadium, the home field for the Wolf Pack, opened in its current site on the Reno campus's northern end on October 23, 1909. The inaugural game at the "new" Mackay Stadium, which now has a capacity of 7,500, was played on October 1, 1966. Nevada and Boise State have been rivals for decades; since their first meeting on September 25, 1971, they have played 45 times.
The animosity between Boise State and Nevada is less intense than between Nevada and UNLV. When the Pro Football Hall of Fame was established in 1968, Motley was voted into it. In 1994, he was also named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. Many have called Marion Motley "The Jackie Robinson of Football." In 1946, Motley was one of the first four black players to sign with the Cleveland Browns, breaking the color barrier in professional football.
