There are many parallels between the histories of the University of Minnesota–Duluth, the University of New Hampshire, and the other Ivy League schools. In sports with no D-II championship, Division II colleges are permitted to play as members of Division I under NCAA rules. This regulation applies to the competition because there is no Division II women's ice hockey championship.
