NCAA Womens Hockey Frozen Four Information

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) hosts the annual NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Tournament, also known as the National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship, in the United States. Women's ice hockey uses a tweaked version of the National Collegiate championship structure, wherein Division I and Division II teams play in the same tournament.

For the first time in the United States, a university fielded a women's ice hockey team in 1965, and that squad was at Brown. The inaugural game for the Pembroke Pandas occurred in February of 1966. The Walpole Brooms were their opponents, and they weren't college students. Cornell University's women's ice hockey team has been around since 1971. It was in 1972 that the Big Red team first faced off against Scarborough, a match they went on to win, 4-3. The Pembroke Pandas were responsible for two of their four 1972 losses.

On December 9, 1975, Yale University fielded a women's hockey team. There are many parallels between the histories of the University of Minnesota–Duluth, the University of New Hampshire, and the other Ivy League schools. In sports with no D-II championship, Division II colleges are permitted to play as members of Division I under NCAA rules. This regulation applies to the competition because there is no Division II women's ice hockey championship.
