The University of Montana's football team, the Montana Grizzlies (also called the "Griz"), plays in the DI Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of college football. The Grizzlies have been a part of the Big Sky Conference since its formation in 1963. Washington-Grizzly Stadium at the University of Montana campus in 2016 averaged 25,377 fans per game.
From 1986 to 2011, the Grizzlies set a record with 25 straight winning seasons. They made seven trips to the NCAA FCS (previously Division I-AA) championship game during that span. After 36 seasons, the 2012 season remains the only losing season for the Montana Grizzlies.
Washington-Grizzly Stadium is the Meca of the FCS, where the Grizzlies play their home games. The audience's constant roar and the supporters' passion have made it famous. Their overall winning percentage is 890 after accounting for postseason play. Stadium Journey magazine named Washington Grizzly Stadium the best in the FCS for the overall quality of the football game day experience and as the seventh best stadium for college football overall, including FBS institutions.
They have the longest active streak of playoff appearances, championships in the Big Sky Conference, and overall playoff appearances. They were the most successful college football program, with 119 victories in the 2000s and the third-most in the 1990s. At Seattle's Husky Stadium, Montana stunned the 20th-ranked (FBS) Washington Huskies on September 4, 2021.
