Minnesota Golden Gophers Mens Hockey Information
The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's ice hockey team represents the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus in college ice hockey. They play at the Division I level and are members of the Big Ten Conference. From 1974 to 2003, the Golden Gophers have won five NCAA titles.
Dr. H. A. Parkyn, a football player and native of Toronto, reportedly established the first University of Minnesota intercollegiate hockey team in 1895. Athletic Park, located in downtown Minneapolis, was razed after a game between an early Minnesota squad and the Winnipeg Seven. The final score was 11-3. In 1929, the team shared the NIAA title with Yale, and in 1940, they won the amateur hockey championship from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).
Currently, Bob Motzko is coaching the Gophers. Don Lucia oversaw the Minnesota Gophers for nine years, during which time the team made it to the NCAA tournament eight times, had five players attain first-string status, and advanced to the Frozen Four three times. The University of North Dakota and the University of Wisconsin are the team's primary rivals.
Minnesota's high school ice hockey teams increased from 26 in 1945 to more than 150 in 1980. In the late '80s and '90s, head coach Doug Woog recruited exclusively Minnesotans, further promoting home-grown talent; however, the lineups of late have been more diverse.
