London Knights Information
The London Knights are a junior ice hockey team from London, Ontario, Canada. They compete in the Ontario Hockey League, a division of the Canadian Hockey League. Originally formed in 1965 under the name London Nationals, the Knights altered their identity in 1968. The Knights have won two Memorial Cups. With the help of the London Gardens venue, the Toronto Maple Leafs got an OHA franchise for the 1965–66 season, which the London Nationals played their first season under.
Mark Hunter was named director of player personnel for the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 21, 2014, and subsequently resigned as general manager of the Knights. Although Hunter continued as club vice president and held his ownership interest in the Knights, Basil McRae succeeded Hunter as general manager. The Knights were in a rebuilding phase during the 2014–15 season. Regardless, they managed a second-place finish in the Midwest division and advanced to the playoffs, where the Erie Otters eliminated them in a sweep.
In 2015–16, the revitalized and potent Knights could not claim the Hamilton Spectator Trophy because of a tiebreaker, even though they finished the season tied for first place in the league with the Erie Otters. The Knights went on a thirteen-game winning streak after taking the first-round playoff series against the Owen Sound Attack to a sixth game. They then swept the Kitchener Rangers, Erie Otters, and Niagara IceDogs on their way to their third OHL championship and fourth Memorial Cup appearance in five seasons.
