The Ice Breaker Tournament is an American college Division I men’s ice hockey tournament. It is played every year at the beginning of each season. The tournament was started in 1997 as an exhibition. The Ice Breaker Tournament was established as an early-season showcase where top-ranked teams were featured in four conferences. The tournament games became an official part of the NCAA season and counted towards the standings. The participants’ selection criterion is based partially upon their pre-season rankings.
The local sports commission served as hosts twice in 2010 and 2012 where there was no availability of local universities. Minnesota is the only team that has played in consecutive Ice Breaker Tournaments during 2013 and 2014. The Ice Breaker Tournament is held during the opening weekend of college hockey season.
