Hickory Crawdads Information
From 1936 until 1960, Hickory, North Carolina, was home to multiple Hickory Rebels baseball teams in the minor leagues. For the 1993 season, Hickory resident and businessman Don Beaver bought the Gastonia Rangers and moved them from North Carolina. The Rangers and the Expos had minor-league affiliates in Gastonia before the transfer.
Supporters were allowed to offer name options. Woodchucks, River Rats, Valley Cats, and Hound Dogs were all contenders. The name "Crawdads" was picked since these animals are common in the area's waterways and are known for their toughness.
In 1993, the Chicago White Sox sent their Class A affiliate, the Crawdads, to play in the South Atlantic League. During their six seasons together, Hickory finished last or near it in most of their league's standings only twice. Unfortunately, they lost every game they played in and were eliminated both times. The two teams parted ways following the 1998 season when the former had a 374-464 record.
