Genesis Open Information
The event had a nomadic life in southern California before World War II, hopping from course to course. Los Angeles Country Club hosted the first tournament ninety-seven years ago, in 1926; El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana hosted the tournament for the only time in 1927. The tournament returned to Los Angeles in 1928, this time to Wilshire Country Club in the Hancock Park area; the following year, for the first time, it was held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades; and for the next decade, it remained there.
The tournament was held at Wilshire CC and Hillcrest CC in 1931 and '32, then at Los Angeles CC in '33 and '34. The tournament was held at Los Angeles Country Club in 1940 after being held at Griffith Park (Wilson course) from 1937 to 1939. In 1938, Babe Zaharias made history as the first female golfer to compete in a men-only professional competition. Before World War II, the tournament was contested at Riviera CC in 1941 and Hillcrest CC in 1942.
The tournament resumed play in 1944 at Wilshire CC and then moved for the next nine years (1945–1953) to Riviera CC, which also held the U.S. Open in June 1948, when Ben Hogan shot a record score to win the tournament. Fox Hills Country Club (now in Culver City) hosted the tournament in 1954, and Inglewood Country Club hosted the game in 1955. Except for 1968, when it was held at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, close to the Rose Bowl, the tournament was held at Rancho Park Golf Course in Los Angeles from 1956 to 1972.
