Cowtown Cowboy Rodeo Information
The Cowtown Rodeo is one of the biggest rodeos to witness. It has been held annually since its inception in 1929 in Pilesgrove Township, New Jersey. The Cowtown is widely considered to be the finest rodeo in the country. Every Saturday (since 1955) has hosted the rodeo show from May through September. In 1957 and 1958, the rodeo was the subject of a nationally syndicated television show. Grant Harris and his loved ones operate the show.
1929, Howard Harris Sr. and his son, Howard "Stoney" Harris Jr., founded the rodeo. As a part of the Salem County Fair, the first rodeo was held on former auction grounds in Woodstown, New Jersey. Harris Acres is the popular name for the area. Before World War II, the rodeo was held yearly, starting in 1938.
In 1955, a television show was produced to bring further attention to the rodeo. The rodeo's success necessitated the construction of a new, larger arena with seating for 4,000 people in 1967. Rodeo shows were filmed and shown nationwide in 1969 and 1970.
The rodeo grounds are located in what was formerly the auction grounds and is now called Harris Acres, a predominantly agricultural region. You may find the grounds near Cowtown Cowboy Outfitters and the Cowtown Farmers Market. About three-quarters of the rodeo grounds are enclosed by simple wooden and aluminum bleachers that serve as the arena.
