Cleveland Monsters Information
The Cleveland Monsters play ice hockey at the professional level in the AHL. The franchise debuted in 2007 under the name Lake Erie Monsters and has been the top NHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets since 2015. Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland is home to the Monsters, who once won the Calder Cup (in 2016).
In 2006, a Cleveland ownership group headed by Dan Gilbert—the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans owner—bought the moribund Utah Grizzlies AHL team on May 16, 2006; this was the beginning of the Monsters.
The Monsters became the Columbus Blue Jackets' American Hockey League affiliate in the 2015–16 season after a multi-year arrangement was announced on April 17, 2015. In 2019, they renewed the multi-season partnership.
The Lake Erie Monsters rebranded as the Cleveland Monsters on August 9, 2016. On August 25, the Colorado Avalanche brought aboard Jared Bednar, the team's head coach who had won the Calder Cup.
The Monsters, playing under their new moniker and coached by John Madden, were not good enough to make the playoffs in 2016–17. The Monsters finished the 2017–18 season in last place in the Western Conference and did not advance to the playoffs.
