Birmingham Bulls Information
The Pelham, Alabama-based Birmingham Bulls are a professional ice hockey club that debuted in the 2017–18 season with the SPHL. The squad takes its moniker from two former East Coast Hockey League and World Hockey Association squads from Birmingham. The pandemic cut short the 2019–20 season. While still serving as a consultant for the team, head coach Jamey Hicks resigned before the 2020-21 season so he could remain in Canada during the epidemic.
Craig Simchuk took his place. In the 2022–23 season, the Bulls achieved their second consecutive postseason spot due to their second-best record in the league. After leading his team to a 36-point comeback from last season's ninth-place finish, Simchuk was awarded the league's best coach.
After losing Game 1 in Fayetteville in OT, Birmingham won the quarterfinal series by sweeping the following two games at home. The Huntsville Havoc, the Bulls' in-state rivals, were the opponents in the semifinals. In the best-of-three series, the home team won overtime games one and two, 3-2. The Bulls and the Havoc scored twice in the second quarter of Game 3, the decisive game before Stefan Brucato put the Bulls ahead with a rebound goal.
