The Big Ten Conference's men's ice hockey championship is known as the Big Ten Tournament. In this competition, the victor earns a bye into the next round of the NCAA Championship.
In the inaugural season of conference play in 2014, the tournament was held at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, alternating annually for the first four years. To accommodate Notre Dame's inclusion in conference play, a new playoff structure was used for the 2018 tournament, with games being played on campus rather than at neutral locations.
In 2018, a new structure was implemented because of low attendance at neutral site tournaments and the addition of Notre Dame as the eighth Big Ten hockey team. The regular season conference champion advances directly to the conference semifinals, while the remaining four clubs are seeded into best-of-three quarterfinals. From here on out, the rest of the playoff is a single-elimination format.
Instead of playing at a neutral location, all games are hosted by the higher-seeded team. The semifinals and finals are played as single games to avoid venue issues throughout the playoffs (in contrast to other conference tournaments).
