Historically, the game has seen the Western Division champion taking against the Eastern Division champion from schools like Temple, Tulane, SMU, Temple, South Florida, and UCF. The victorious team from each conference got to play in their home stadium for the championship game.
When UConn withdrew from the conference in 2020, the divisions dissolved. As a result of recent changes to NCAA regulations governing conference finals, this year's game will feature the conference's two best teams.
The game was shown on ABC by ESPN, who owns the broadcast rights. After formally withdrawing from The American on July 1, 2020, UConn's football program became an FBS independent upon joining the Big East. After the preliminary investigation, The Americans decided against adding a second team to equalize divisions.
With the elimination of divisions in 2020, the two teams with the best records in conference regular season play have participated in the championship game ever since. 2023–24, division play was not resumed, even though the number of conferences grew.
