Zach Heckendorf is a soulful composer who draws inspiration from his favorite groove-friendly acoustic performers, vintage folk-pop songwriters from the '70s, and cerebral hip-hop. His songs pair well with lyrics that examine life and love in a way that's sometimes humorous but always honest and philosophical without being pompous. A child prodigy who debuted with his high school release Speed Checked by Aircraft, Heckendorf has since polished his sound with the release of Artifacts in 2017.
Young Zach Heckendorf was raised in Denver, Colorado, where he developed an early interest in music. At ten, he picked up the guitar and composed his first song, a lyric about the Great Depression, in fourth grade. Inspired by pop-punk acts like Green Day and Blink-182, he and his pals progressed to playing in rock bands. At the age of 16, he had already issued an EP, performed regularly as a musician, either alone or with a band, and developed a funk-infused acoustic guitar style influenced by Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson.
At 17, he had already opened for the John Butler Trio and Tea Leaf Green, and his manager was Gregg Latterman (who had previously worked with Five for Fighting, Train, and John Mayer). During his final year of high school, 2011, he also released a full-length album titled The Cool Down. In conjunction with their distributor Republic Records, Latterman oversaw the indie label Aware Records, where he signed Heckendorf.
