Yolanda Adams Information
Yolanda Yvette Adams (August 27, 1961) is an American host, actress, and singer. She was born in Houston, Texas. After graduating from Texas Southern University, she worked as a schoolteacher and part-time model in Houston. She eventually stopped teaching to pursue singing full-time. As a lead singer with Houston's Southeast Inspirational Choir affiliated with the Church of God in Christ, under the supervision of Carl Preacher, Brenda Waters, and Shirley Joiner, Adams first caught the notice of Thomas Whitfield and Sound of Gospel Records.
With a performance titled "My Trust Lies in You," Adams was featured on the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Choir's album Give Us Peace in 1986. She later secured a recording contract with Sound of Gospel, and her first album, Just As I Am, was released in 1987. Ben Tankard, a producer and keyboardist, discovered her in 1990 and signed her to his tiny company, Tribute Records, where she published Through The Storm.
With the release of Mountain High... Valley Low on Elektra Records in 1999, Adams received her first significant exposure outside of the urban contemporary gospel arena. Several mainstream performers and producers contributed to the album's creation. Adams released a Christmas album in 2000 and a live record in 2001. (The Experience). Adams has won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album for The Experience.
