Yann Tiersen Information
Yann Tiersen (June 23, 1970) is a French composer and musician. He was born in Brest, Brittany, France. He learned to play piano at four when he reached the age of six; he started learning violin. Tiersen received classical training from different musical academies, including those in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Nantes, and Rennes. As a teenager, Tiersen was influenced by punk subculture and the bands such as Joy Division and The Stooges.
Tiersen started his career by recording background music for several numbers of short films and plays. In June 1995, Tiersen released his debut album entitled La Valse des monstres. He released Rue des cascades in April 1996. It was a collection of short pieces recorded over a mandolin, a piano accordion, a harpsichord, and a toy piano.
Tiersen gained massive fame after releasing his third studio album in 1998 entitled Le Phare (The Lighthouse). The album sold over 160,000 copies in total. Other studio albums released by Tiersen include L’Absente (2001), Les Retrouvailles (2005), Dust Lane (2010), Skyline (2011), 8 (aka Infinity) (2014), EUSA (2016), All (2019), Kerber (2021), and Portrait (2019).
Throughout his career, Tiersen has worked with different record labels, including ANTI, Mute, Virgin, EMI, Ici, d’ailleurs..., and Sine Terra Firma.
