Wynton Marsalis Information
Wynton Learson Marsalis (October 18, 1961) is an American virtuoso trumpeter, teacher, composer, and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is from New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up in the suburb of Kenner. Marsalis was named after jazz pianist Wynton Kelly. His oldest and youngest brothers are also jazz musicians. Wynton received his first trumpet at the young age of six and learned it seriously at the age of twelve. Marsalis attended Benjamin Franklin High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts later. He learned classical music at school and jazz at home with the help of his father.
Marsalis began playing in funk bands and a marching band led by Danny Barker. He also performed the trumpet publicly being the only black musician in the New Orleans Civic Orchestra. At the age of fourteen, Marsalis performed a trumpet concerto by Joseph Haydn along with the New Orleans Philharmonic. After two years, he performed Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major by Bach. Marsalis was the youngest musician admitted to Tanglewood Music Center when he was only seventeen.
In 1980, Marsalis became a member of The Jazz Messengers and toured Europe. He later shifted his focus towards jazz. For the first time, he recorded with Blakey and went on tour with Herbie Hancock. His debut album was 1982 Wynton Marsalis via Columbia Records. The album was followed by 1982 Fathers & Sons, 1983 Think of One, 1984 HotHouse Flowers, 1986 J Mood, and more.
Marsalis also hosted the educational program, Marsalis on Music in 1995. He was named a cultural correspondent for CBS This Morning in December 2011. He is the winner of many Grammy Awards, including the categories; Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group, and two more. Marsalis has also earned several honors to date.
