William Currie "Willie" Watson (September 23, 1979) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, actor, and banjo player. He is also the founding member of the Old Crow Medicine Show. Watson is from Watkins Glen, New York. Growing up in Upstate New York, near Ithaca, he frequently listened to music on the radio from Michael Jackson to Nirvana. Being an 80s and '90s kid, he also listened to his father's record albums, which include Neil Young and The Rolling Stones. The music Watson plays is defined as a bluegrass and folk type.
Watson met Ben Gould when he was in high school, and they together started making music. At a weekly old-time jam, he was exposed to old-time music for the first time. Later, both of the music makers dropped out of their schools and created a band named The Funnest Game. The newbie band gained the respect of local musicians and a following. They started to appear weekly at the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance in Trumansburg and the Rongovian Embassy with Richie Stearns.
Watson met the future co-founder of Old Crow Medicine Show, Ketch Secor, and dissolved his old band and joined Ketch's group with his other three musicians. As a group, they recorded Trans:mission, a cassette of ten songs that were planned to be sold on the road during their Trans:mission tour in October 1998. Watson left the band shortly to pursue his solo career in 2011.
Some of the notable discographies by Watson are Folk Singer Vol. 1 (2014) and Folk Singer Vol. 2 (2017). He also performed in Newport Folk Festival, SXSW in Austin, Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, Fayetteville Roots Festival in Arkansas, Pickathon Music Festival in Oregon, and many others. He also appeared in the Americana Music Festival in Nashville. Watson was also seen as The Kid in the Coen brothers' The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018).
