William Basinski Information
William Basinski (June 25, 1958) is an American avant-garde composer. He is based in the city of New York. He's a clarinetist, saxophonist, sound artist, and video artist, among other things. Basinski is most known for his four-volume album The Disintegration Loops (2002–2003), which gradually deteriorated twenty-year-old cassettes of his earlier work. Basinski, William James, was born in Houston, Texas, in 1958. He grew up in a Catholic household.
Basinski, a classically trained clarinetist, attended the University of North Texas in the late 1970s to study jazz saxophone and composition. In 1978, he began building his vocabulary with tape loops and ancient reel-to-reel tape players, inspired by minimalists such as Steve Reich and Brian Eno.
Shortwavemusic was his debut release. Even though it was created in 1983, Carsten Nicolai's Raster-Noton sublabel published it on vinyl in a limited edition in 1998. Watermusic, self-released in 2000 on Basinski's 2062 Records, followed. He founded "Arcadia," a performance space at 118 N. 11th Street, in 1989. He had played saxophone with rockabilly band The Rockats and opened for David Bowie. Later in his career, Basinski would dedicate a single from A Shadow in Time to David Bowie.
In August and September 2001, Basinski began to work on The Disintegration Loops, a four-volume record that would become his most known work. The recordings were made from old tape loops that have been deteriorated in quality.
