Wheeling Nailers Information
The Wheeling Nailers are a professional ECHL ice hockey club headquartered in Wheeling, West Virginia. They play in the Eastern Conference and are affiliated with the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins and the American Hockey League's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Nailers have been around longer than any other minor league team below the American Hockey League and have never missed a season of play.
The WesBanco Arena, originally the Wheeling Civic Center, is the team's home field. In 2010–2011 and 2011–2012, the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania served as an alternate venue. In their 2003–04 season, they had 106 points, ending a five-year postseason drought. The Reading Royals prevailed in five games, with a final score of 3-2. They enjoyed a fantastic 2005–06 season, reaching the playoffs and losing to Toledo in the last seconds of the championship game.
As of the end of the 2011–2012 season, the Nailers was owned by the Hockey Club of the Ohio Valley, a partnership between the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association and the Ohio Valley Industrial & Business Development Corporation, as announced by the ECHL on March 29, 2012. The previous owner, Brooks, had owned the team since its inception.
