Wesley Stace Information
Wesley Stace (October 22, 1965) is an English folk-pop author, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Hastings, East Sussex. Stace's first stage name was John Wesley Harding, a moniker he adopted from Bob Dylan's 1967 album of the same name, in which Dylan mangled the name of the outlaw John Wesley Hardin by adding a final 'g' to the end of it. After gaining attention as the opening act for John Hiatt, he was signed by Demon Records, who released his live album, It Happened One Night, to widespread critical acclaim in 1988.
Because of the album's success, he signed with Sire Records, who issued his follow-up album, Here Comes the Groom, in 1990. Comparisons to Elvis Costello dogged Stace's career because the album includes members of The Attractions. Sire dropped him from the label after releasing his two albums, 1991's The Name Above the Title and 1992's Why We Fight. Both received positive reviews and garnered a dedicated fan base because of his energetic live performances.
Throughout the '90s and '00s, he released more songs under the name John Wesley Harding on various indie labels; one of these tracks, 'I'm Wrong About Everything,' was used as the theme song for the film High Fidelity's soundtrack. While performing alone at the Berkeley Community Theatre in 1995, he was the first opening act for Bruce Springsteen in 20 years.
