Vince Giordano Information
Vince Giordano (March 11, 1952) is an American saxophonist. He was born in New York. Giordano wound up a Victrola and listened to '20s music when he was five. When he was 15, he began his formal career as a musician, playing the string bass and bass saxophone and taking lessons from Bill Challis to learn how to write arrangements in the style of the dance bands of the 1920s and 1930s. He has shared the stage with the New Paul Whiteman Orchestra, the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Ensemble, the New York Jazz Repertory Company, and Leon Redbone. His ensemble, The Nighthawks, performs the music of early jazz greats like Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington, with him on bass saxophone, string bass, and tuba.
His acting and musical contributions to Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club led to gigs with Dick Hyman's Orchestra on six different Woody Allen soundtracks, and he eventually became a bass player in Allen's films, most notably in Sean Penn's ensemble for Sweet and Lowdown. Giordano and the Nighthawks have contributed to the sound recordings of such films as The Aviator, Finding Forrester, The Good Shepherd, and Public Enemies, as well as the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce and the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
Previously, Giordano and his ensemble performed on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. During the Egyptian Theatre's screening of The Cameraman, a silent picture starring Buster Keaton, he was given center stage at Hollywood's Music Box as part of the Turner Classic Movie Film Festival.
