Village People Information
Village People are an American disco group from New York City, New York. The band was founded in 1977 by Jacques Morali, a French musical composer and producer, and his business partner Henri Belolo. The group deals in soul-funk, disco, and R&B genres. Village People underwent many lineup changes since its inception. Still, the current one consists of Victor Willis (Cop/Admiral), James Lee (GI), J.J. Lippold (Leatherman), James Kwong (Construction worker), and Chad Freeman (Cowboy). Village People has worked with many record labels to date including Phonogram, Polydor, Ariola, Polygram, Black Scorpio, RCA Victor, Casablanca Records, Mercury Records, RCA Ariola, BMG Ariola, BMG Music, and Universal Music.
Village People are famous for their on-stage costumes, suggestive lyrics, and catchy tunes. The band released its debut album entitled Village People on July 11, 1977, which targeted the disco's large gay audience. Some of the initial hits by the band were "Macho Man," "In the Navy," "Go West," and the biggest one, "YMCA." Gypsy Lane was another studio album by Village People that was followed by Macho Man, Cruisin', Go West, Renaissance, Live and Sleazy, Can't Stop the Music, Fox on the Box/In the Street, and Sex Over the Phone.
Village People also released a few other hit singles such as "In Hollywood (Everybody Is a Star)," "Ready for the 80's", "Can't Stop the Music," "5 O'Clock in the Morning", "Livin' in the Wildlife," and "Let's Go Back to the Dance Floor." The band also released some compilations such as Live: Seoul Song Festival (1984), The Best of Village People (1994), 20th Century Masters, and The Millennium Collection...The Best of Village People (2001).
In 2020, the Village People were added to the National Recording Registry by the US Library of Congress.
