Vienna Boys Choir Information
The Vienna Boys' Choir, also known as the Wiener Sängerknaben in German, is an Austrian choir composed of boy sopranos and altos. It is widely recognized as a top-tier boys' chorus. The lads come from a wide variety of nations, including Austria. The choir is an independent, charitable group.
The Vienna Boys choir comprises about a hundred choristers aged nine to fourteen. The boys play over 300 concerts each year in front of almost 500,000 people while touring as one of four touring choirs. They are named after Austrian composers Bruckner, Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert.
In 2001, Gerald Wirth was named artistic director of the choir. Since then, however, the choir has been at odds with the Vienna State Opera due to pressures to modernize and criticism of the group's artistic standards. To enhance its reputation, the Vienna Boys' Choir has released several pop music recordings and given up the sailor uniforms it has worn since the 1920s.
With its main office in Hong Kong, the Vienna Boys Choir Music Academy (VBCMA) is the VBCs official music academy. The VBCMA continues the Vienna Boy Choir's pedagogical heritage by providing music programming that features songs from various cultures and languages throughout the year.
The current President is Erich Arthold, who started filling this role in Dec 2022.
