Victoria Symphony Orchestra Information
Members of the Royal Canadian Navy established the Victoria Symphony as an amateur orchestra in 1941. After seven years with the quartet, Melvin Knudsen stepped down as conductor in 1948 and was replaced by Hans Gruber. In 1963, Otto-Werner Mueller was named the orchestra's senior conductor, and 1967, Laszlo Gati took his place. During Gati's tenure as conductor in the mid-1970s, the orchestra matured into a fully professional unit.
In 1979, Paul Freeman moved on from his assistant conductor role with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to become the Victoria Symphony's lead conductor. Glen Fast was his associate conductor from 1983 until Freeman's retirement in 1988. After Freeman's retirement, Fast temporarily took over as principal conductor. Peter McCoppin was named conductor in 1989 and stayed in that role until 1999, when Kees Bakels replaced him. After Bakels left in 2002, interim music director Timothy Vernon was named.
Principal Guest Conductor of the Victoria Symphony from 2003–2007 was Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who is now music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera and has held positions with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. After Nézet-Séguin's tenure ended in 2009, Alain Trudel, a fellow Québécois musician and conductor, took over the helm until 2013.
