Victor Wainwright Information
Victor Lawton Wainwright (February 4, 1981) is an American blues singer, pianist, and songwriter born in Savannah, Georgia. His musical talent was inherited from both his grandfather and father as they were well-known blues musicians. The two also acted as Wainwright’s early music mentors. Wainwright played “Fur Elise” at a family gathering when he was ten. During his high school years, his ensemble backed Eric Culberson at the Savannah Blues Bar.
Wainwright met Stephen Dees, a Florida native, in Ormond Beach, Florida, in 2004. His meeting led to Dees co-writing and producing Wainwright’s debut album entitled “Piana from Savannah,” which came out in 2005. Wainwright played alongside Reverend Billy C. Wirtz on the live album entitled “Pianist Envy – Group Therapy” by Wirtz.
Wainwright and Dees joined forces under Victor Wainwright & the Wildroots after the release of Piana from Savannah. They both shared vocal duties, and the latter on bass and guitar with Greg Gumpel as lead guitarist (2002 through 2009). They released Beale Street to the Bayou in September 2009 on Wildroots Records. The album appeared on the Root Music Report “Top 50 Blues,” the Tennessee Roots Charts, the Blues Internet Charts, and Collectif des Radio Blues Charts in Europe.
Some of the other notable albums by Wainwright include Lit Up! (2011), Easy Livin’ (2013), Boom Town (2015), and Victor Wainwright and the Train (2018). After Wildroots Records, the band also worked with Blind Pig Records and Ruf records.
