United States Army Field Band Information
The United States Army has a traveling band called the Washington, DC-based United States Army Field Band. It gives about 400 concerts annually, and its members have played in all 50 states and 25 countries. The Army Field Band comprises the Concert Band, the Soldiers' Chorus, the Jazz Ambassadors, and the Six-String Soldiers, all of whom perform out of Fort George G. Meade in Maryland.
The band is the first unit in the Presidential Inaugural Parade every four years. It has also been featured at the 2002 Winter Olympics, the state funerals of Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford, the National Memorial Day Concert, three World Series, the Baltimore Orioles' annual home finale, and the 1995 Presidential Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of V-J Day.
With its origins in 1946, the Concert Band was the first of four distinct performing ensembles that make up what is now known as The United States Army Field Band. It was in the early days of the Concert Band that the Soldiers' Chorus first appeared when members would assemble in front of the band to sing before the audience. Traditional and contemporary songs were arranged for the choir in a glee club style. When the unit first started holding auditions for the Chorus in 1957, they were only for singers. In 1974, the Soldiers' Chorus welcomed its first female musician-soldiers as full-time unit members.
