The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (often known as UOGB) is an English musical orchestra. George Hinchliffe founded it along with Kitty Lux as a fun project in 1985. The group's current lineup consists of George Hinchliffe, Dave Suich, Richie Williams, Hester Goodman, Will Grove-White, Jonty Bankes, Peter Brooke Turner, Leisa Rea, David Bowie, Ewan Wadrop, Ben Rouse, and Laura Currie. The ensemble features various sizes of ukuleles and registers from soprano to bass.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain often performs the songs with a reinterpretation. Sometimes, there's an entire genre twist during the performances. Also, songs from multiple genres are perfectly blended or combined. The orchestra performed its very first gig at the Roebuck pub. It is a popular spot just off Trinity Church Square in London. Fortunately, it was a sell-out, and right after this first performance, the orchestra was prominently on national radio.
For a while, the Ukulele Orchestra enjoyed a regular monthly session. It took place in the back room at the former Empress of Russia pub, located in Islington, London. In a few years, the ensemble had already secured a spot on BBC One Television and appeared live on BBC Radio 1. Soon the orchestra released an album and performed it at the famous WOMAD festival.
The Ukulele Orchestra has been actively touring the world. They have performed at diverse venues and countless events, including the UK Houses of Parliament, Ronnie Scott's jazz club, Cambridge Folk Festival, Edinburgh Festival, The Royal Festival Hall, Hay Festival, New York's Carnegie Hall, Glastonbury Festival, and the Sydney Opera House.
