Tri-City Storm Information
Located in Kearney, Nebraska, the Tri-City Storm is a junior ice hockey team that competes in the USHL's Western Conference. Three cities in central Nebraska—Kearney, Hastings, and Grand Island—are referenced in its name. A new franchise would have been placed in Kearney, Nebraska, for the 2000-01 season by Ted Baer, owner of the Omaha Lancers at the time, after a unanimous vote by the USHL on May 15, 1999. Jim Hillman was appointed as the inaugural head coach in June 1999. September 30, 2000, was the first game the Tri-City Storm won.
Mason Appleton, Christian Hanson, Christian Blake Coleman, Nick Lappin, Jarod Palmer, Scott Parse, Jaden Schwartz, Bill Thomas, and Mike Vecchione are notable former players who have continued to play professionally. Thomas and Konrad Reeder scored 60 goals with the Kearney Hornets, tying them for the team record. A four-year Storm player, Mario Lamoureux has 85 assists, the most of all time.
Muckalt departed the Storm before the 2017–18 season to take a position as associate head coach at the University of Michigan, where he played college basketball. Anthony Noreen, who had previously coached the Youngstown Phantoms and the Orlando Solar Bears, has been chosen as his successor. In 2018–19, Noreen was named USHL Coach of the Year after guiding the squad to the regular season Anderson Cup title. Despite the epidemic cutting short the 2019–20 season, the Storm extended Noreen's contract until 2023–24.
