Sheehan weaves through the emotions of feeling imprisoned in an apocalyptic groundhog day in his most recent collection of songs recorded over a few days in the Hudson Valley of New York. I returned to my family's farm in West Virginia to breathe fresh air after being prevented from touring with everyone else in the business. He claims it took me a week or two to start writing a group of songs that made sense as a record. I had the songs, a working title for the album, and studio time reserved with a group of close friends who I knew could make these songs come to life by the end of the summer.
They recorded some of Sheehan's best songs to date, including the Tom Petty-inspired "All You've Got," while wearing masks and keeping their distance. You get the impression that you are walking through an unexpected scene of shadows and tape machines thanks to a booming Hammond B3 organ and a Telecaster that sounds like Bruce Springsteen. With a Farfisa organ bathed in reverb balancing over a gentle tune, the floating ballad "Sleeveless Hearts" draws us into a world where suppressing vulnerability doesn't gain you any points. You can feel the unpredictability of telling someone you love the real you.
Sheehan provided us a glimpse of what has been on his mind with his most recent album, "Postcards from the Country." Sheehan gave us songs like "To Be Alone" and "Paris," both featured with American Songwriter when the record came out along with PopMatters and The Bluegrass Situation. Sheehan was finally old enough to reflect on his childhood and how early moments created the person he is today.
