Tommy Emmanuel Information
William Thomas Emmanuel AM (May 31, 1955) is an Australian guitarist. He started as a session musician for various groups, but his solo work earned him several awards. Emmanuel was born in Muswellbrook, New South Wales, and he corresponded with his idol, Chet Atkins, who lived in Nashville.
Together with Atkins, Emmanuel released their first album as a duo, The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World, in 1997. Until the release of "Solo Sessions" by Atkins' estate following his passing, this album would be his last. In late 1997, Emmanuel and Atkins shared a stage on 'Country Christmas' on The Nashville Network.
By the late '70s, he had already played drums on several albums and jingles in addition to performing with his brother Phil in the band Goldrush. In the late '70s, he rose to fame as the Southern Star Band's lead guitarist, performing alongside Doug Parkinson on stage.
Emmanuel received the Certified Guitar Player award from Atkins at the 15th Annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in July 1999, a distinction that Chet had previously only given to four guitarists. Atkins, a pioneer in the guitar music genre, established this honor, which gives it prestige.
Emmanuel was made an AM in the Australian Order of Merit in June 2010. In 2012, then-governor Steve Beshear gave Emmanuel the honorary rank of "Kentucky Colonel." He announced his new citizenship as an American during a concert in July of 2019.
