Tom Paxton Information
Thomas Richard Paxton (October 31, 1937) is an American folk singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Chicago, Illinois. During his early childhood, Paxton’s family moved to Wickenburg, Arizona, where he was first introduced to folk music. He discovered the music of Burl Ives and similar artists. Soon his family relocated to Bristow, Oklahoma, which Paxton considers to be his final hometown. He received his first instrument, a ukulele, at 15 years old. The next year, he was gifted a guitar by his aunt. Paxton attended the University of Oklahoma and studied drama in school.
After graduating in 1959, Paxton had a chance to act in summer stock theatre. He began writing songs, and at the same time, Paxton joined the Army. After an honorable discharge from the Army, he joined the Chad Mitchell Trio via publisher Milt Okun. Soon Paxton began performing at The Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village and recorded a privately produced live album entitled I’m the Man That Built the Bridges.
Some of his other notable studio albums include Ramblin’ Boy (Elektra, 1964), Outward Bound (Elektra, 1966), The Things I Notice Now (Elektra, 1969), Tom Paxton 6 (Elektra, 1970), Peace Will Come (Reprise, 1972), Something in My Life (Private Stock, 1975), And Loving You (Flying Fish, 1986), Outward Bound/Morning Again (Wea/Rhino, 2004), and The Essential (Apple Music, 2019).
Paxton earned many awards and honors during his 50-year career, such as the ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award in Folk Music, four Grammy Nominations, a Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting at BBC Radio 2’s Folk Awards, an official Parliamentary tribute at the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, and a special lifetime tribute from the World Folk Music Association.
