Ohio's second-largest city is home to a thriving musical community, including the Toledo Jazz Orchestra. Depending on the instruments required by a particular piece or seasonal roster, the band can have anywhere from ten to twenty members. Peter Erskine, the drummer with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, is only one of the many famous jazz musicians with whom he has shared the stage.
According to former director David Melle's obituary, the TJO was founded in the 1980s. Originally formed in the early 2000s as part of the Toledo Jazz Society (later renamed the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Society), the group disbanded in 2006, went inactive for two years, and then reformed in 2010 with an expanded lineup of 18 musicians. This association has evolved into a separate non-governmental entity. A 2013 International Trumpet Guild solo competition award winner is among the group's members. Other members include local performing pros and music instructors from nearby universities.
