Tim O'Brien Band Information
Tim O'Brien (March 16, 1954) is an American bluegrass and country musician. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. After hearing a Bob Dylan song for the first time when he was 12 years old, thanks to his elder sister Mollie, he decided to pursue music seriously. He picked up guitar, violin, and mandolin as a teenager and taught himself. His singing sister Mollie and he started performing Peter, Paul, and Mary songs as a duo while in high school, playing at churches and coffeehouses.
After reuniting for a Mother's Day concert in 1984, O'Brien and his sister Mollie O'Brien recorded the duet album Take Me Back in 1988. In his 4.5/5 review for AllMusic, Chip Renner referred to the album as "a masterpiece." They resumed their Americana duo performances in 1986 and released two more albums, Remember Me (1992) and Away Out on the Mountain (1994), between then and now. Sugar Hill Records was the home for all three albums.
After leaving Hot Rize, O'Brien released many albums under his name. Shortly after signing with the label, he recorded the "Odd Man In" album before being released. Sugar Hill Records eventually released the record, and O'Brien has yet to sign to a big label. O'Brien and Kathy Mattea's duet, "The Battle Hymn of Love," reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts in 1990.
