Stephen Mallatratt adapted the 1987 Broadway play The Woman in Black. The English novelist Susan Hill wrote the eponymous book in 1983, and the play is adapted from it. Producer Peter Wilson of PW Productions oversaw the play's creation. Notably, the entire performance is performed by just three actors. In 1987, it had its world premiere at Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre. With 13,232 performances from its 1989 opening to March 4, 2023, the production became the second longest-running non-musical play in West End history, behind only The Mousetrap.
Herford brought the play back to New York City in 2020. The McKittrick Hotel served as the site for the production, which reenacted the 1987 Scarborough bar scene in the McKittrick's Club Car. David Acton played Kipps, while Ben Porter portrayed The Actornited States epidemic forced its closure on January 23, 2020, the original opening date.
The announcement that Saturday, March 4, 2023, would be the show's final performance at the Fortune Theatre was made public on November 9, 2022. Matthew Spencer played The Actor, while Julian Forsyth played Kipps in the final cast. The show was the second-longest-running play in West End history, and the fourth-longest-running show overall, having played 13,232 performances until closing. The show moved to a new UK Tour in March 2023 after its final performance in the West End, and in September of the same year, it opened at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.
