Jake Smith is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He is professionally known by his stage name, The White Buffalo. He was born in Oregon in 1974 or 1975 and grew up in California. Smith studied history at university. He is known for his wide range in pitch within his singing. He is also known for incorporating whistling into his music, where harmonica is often used in roots music. Smith has been compared to that late singer and songwriter Richie Havens. He grew up listening to punk rock and country music. According to him, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan had a significant influence on his songwriting.
In 2002, Smith released his debut full-length album entitled, Hogtied Like a Rodeo. The album was followed by The White Buffalo EP produced by Eel’s Koool G Murder. In 2010, he released his second EP, Prepare for Black and Blue. It was recorded in six days along with producer Jimmy Messer. In 2011, The White Buffalo released his third EP entitled, Lost and Found.
Other studio albums released by Smith include Hogtied Revisited (2008), Once Upon a Time in the West (2012), Shadows, Greys, and Evil Ways (2013), Love & The Death of Damnation (2015), Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights (2017), and On the Widow’s Walk (2020). His notable performance includes the 2011 Bonnaroo Festival and his performance on The Living Room Sessions in December 2011. He was also named one of twelve artists to watch in Winter Music Preview in 2012 by NPR.
