The Turtles Information
The Turtles is an American rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan. Singles of "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" and "Fiberglass Jungle" were issued in 1963 on the local "Capco Records" label. The Crossfires signed to the up-and-coming White Whale Records with KRLA, KFWB DJ, and club proprietor Reb Foster. To fit in with the popular music scene, the band changed its name to the Tyrtles, a deliberate error that evokes the Byrds and the Beatles.
The fad wording did not last long, though, and the Turtles became their official moniker. The Turtles, like the Byrds before them, hit it big with a cover of a Bob Dylan tune. The title single from their debut album, "It Ain't Me Babe," made it into the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late summer of 1965.
In early 1966, they had a hat trick of hits with "Let Me Be" in the top 30 and "You Baby" in the top 20. The song "You Baby," with its complex vocal harmonies and upbeat tempo, was a turning point in the band's sound, marking a departure from the political Byrds-type folk rock and ushering in a new era in which the band's sound encompassed everything from chamber pop to straightforward pop music.
