The Travelin McCourys Information
The Travelin' McCourys is a Nashville, Tennessee-based bluegrass band that formed in 2009. Cody Kilby (guitar and vocals), Alan Bartram (bass and vocals), Jason Carter (fiddle and vocals), Rob McCoury (banjo and vocals), and Ronnie McCoury (drums and vocals) make up the current lineup of the band (mandolin and vocals). Ronnie and Rob McCoury, who play mandolin and banjo, began performing with their father, bluegrass great Del McCoury, and his band as adolescents in the 1980s. Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals was the band's original name, but it was discarded in 1988 in favor of the more straightforward Del McCoury Band.
Since their debut tour with the Lee Boys, the Travelin' McCourys have established themselves as a separate entity from the Del McCoury Band. They still perform as the Del McCoury Band, but they now alternate between the two groups. While the two bands have many similarities on stage, the Travelin' McCourys have moved away from the Del McCoury Band's more conventional sound. They have embraced a wider range of musical influences.
The Travelin' McCourys developed the Grateful Ball, a bluegrass field homage to the Grateful Dead. It all started with a one-off concert at Urban Chestnut Brewing in St. Louis in the summer of 2016 with the Travelin' McCourys and the Jeff Austin Band.
The Travelin' McCoury's have published two albums, Pick (a collaboration with Keller Williams) in 2012 and the namesake album in 2018, which won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album, as well as a handful of solo recordings.
