The Seldom Scene Information
The Seldom Scene is a bluegrass band formed in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1971. The current lineup consists of Lou Reid (mandolin, guitar, and vocals), Dudley Connell (guitar and vocals), Ronnie Simpkins (bass), Fred Travers (dobro and vocals), and Ron Stewart (banjo and fiddle). Previously, to coordinate each member's schedules, they agreed to play one night a week at local clubs. The group occasionally performed at local festivals and concerts. Later on, the band went through several lineup changes.
The Seldom Scene now performs nationwide. The group members have received critical acclaim for their work. One of their albums entitled “Scenechronized,” which was recorded in 2007, received a Grammy Award nomination. The group also performed at a White House dinner honoring the 2008 U.S. Olympic team in July 2008. The Seldom Scene played the National Folk Festival on July 11-13, 2008. The group released “Long Time… Seldom Scene” on April 22, 2014, on the Smithsonian Folkways.
Ben Eldridge retired from the Seldom Scene after serving for 44 years. Rickie Simpkins replaced him, and in 2017, Ron Stewart replaced Simpkins. Rounder Records announced a new album for Seldom Scene in 2019 entitled “Changes.” Other notable albums that the group has released to date include Different Roads (2007), Scene It All (2000), Dream Scene (1996), Like We Used to Be (1994), Scene 20: 20th Anniversary Concert (1992), and A Change of Scenery (1988).
