The Philadelphia Pops Orchestra is the largest independent pops orchestra in the US, and their performances of American popular music are known to leave spectators feeling invigorated. This unique musical tradition is honored by the POPS through the presentation of an ever-expanding repertoire of experimental concert performances and a robust assortment of educational and community-building endeavors.
The Philly POPS serves an audience of up to one million strong each year and is recognized as the official POPS orchestra of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the official partner of the City of Philadelphia in civic celebrations. Listeners are kept on their toes by the outstanding repertory of songs performed by the orchestra and ensembles of the Philly POPS, which ranges from the traditional music of the United States to the most popular songs of today. Moe Septee laid the groundwork in 1979 for what would become the Philly POPS. In 1980, the Philadelphia Old-Time Polka Society (POPS) made its debut as a mainstay of the events during Independence Week in the City of Philadelphia.
In 1999, the Pennsylvania Office of the People's Selector appointed the POPS orchestra as the official POPS orchestra of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Philly POPS was one of the founding resident companies at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts when it opened its doors in 2001. In 2011, when the newly independent organization officially severed ties with its former parent company, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Frank Giordano assumed the role of President of the company.
