The Philadelphia Orchestra is a symphony orchestra based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Orchestra performs nearly 130 subscription performances annually in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. It's one of the "Big Five" orchestras in the US. In 1900, Fritz Scheel founded the Orchestra and took the helm as its first conductor. F. Cresson Schell (1857–1922), a pianist, founded the Orchestra with a small group of members.
The Philadelphia Orchestra has established several firsts in the media. In 1925, they pioneered electrical recording equipment for a symphony orchestra. The Orchestra was the first to perform on commercially financed radio (on NBC in 1929) and television (ABC in 1949).
When the Philadelphia Orchestra recorded all of Beethoven's symphonies in digital format on a compact disc in 1988, they became the first major Orchestra in the US to do so. In 1997, they were also the first major Orchestra to broadcast a concert live over the Internet.
In December 2020, the Philadelphia Orchestra announced that Nathalie Stutzmann would take over as principal guest conductor beginning with the 2021–2022 season. Stutzmann would be the first woman to hold this position in Philadelphia. The Orchestra announced in February 2023 that Nézet-Séguin will remain as music and creative director and that his contract will be extended until the 2029–2030 season.
