The Coral Reefer Band Information
The Coral Reefer ensemble is Jimmy Buffett's traveling and recording ensemble. Coral reefs and "reefer" (marijuana terminology) are both hinted at in the band's name. One night in 1970 at The Hub on the University of Southern Mississippi campus, an original Coral Reefer named Fingers Taylor would find Buffett performing solo. This set the stage for their ongoing partnership, as Taylor played harmonica accompaniment for a portion of the show.
Just over three and a half months before Buffett passed away in September 2023, the band played their last show together in San Diego on May 6, 2023. In an interview on October 30, 2023, Mac McAnally said that the Coral Reefer Band would keep touring and performing Buffett's music, following Buffett's desire.
As the house band for the 'Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett' event at the Hollywood Bowl, the band reassembled for the first time since Buffett's demise on April 11, 2024. McAnally officially welcomed Scotty Emerick, Caroline Jones, and Jake Shimabukuro as permanent band members during the performance. Throughout the 2024 New Orleans JazzFest, the band's many incarnations played at various events until the whole ensemble took the stage.
