The Billings Symphony Orchestra Information
Robert and Anne "Frankie" Staffanson, both musicians, sought to provide a space where Billings area musicians could play and share their passion for classical music with the community in 1950. The Billings Symphony Society was founded via the generous support of local companies, the proceeds from fundraising events, and contributions from performers and music fans in the area.
On opening night in 1951, the Billings Symphony featured 55 musicians. By 1952, when the melody was added, Staffanson had finally achieved the full symphonic sound he had envisioned. Attendance during Symphony performances is frequently at capacity. On performance weekends, they typically performed twice, first at the Lincoln Center Auditorium and then, following renovations in 1987, at the Fox Theater (now known as the Alberta Bair Theater). Beginning in the early 1950s, notable musicians such as New York City pianist Ampara Iturbi were invited to perform as special guests.
After five years, Staffanson left the Billings Symphony. A conducting competition is how he was discovered by the Springfield (Massachusetts) Symphony. On the recommendation of famed violinist and Philadelphia Orchestra conductor Eugene Ormandy, they brought him on as their resident conductor. Staffanson moved from Massachusetts to Bozeman, Montana, after his term ended there. He died there on April 27, 2019. Staffanson and many dedicated volunteers laid the groundwork for the Billings Symphony, which is now enjoyed by thousands of people every year.
