Thao Information
Thao is an American singer and songwriter. She was born in Virginia. While helping at her mother's laundromat, 12-year-old Thao picked up the guitar and started creating songs. In North Carolina, her Vietnamese parents, exiles, finally met each other. She and her friend Brenna Clerkin performed as a pop-country duo in high school. A graduate of Fairfax County, Virginia's Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, she got a bachelor's degree in sociology and women's studies from the College of William & Mary.
Like the Linen, her debut album was published in 2005, and the following year she went on tour in support of Laura Veirs. She released the single "Tuvalu" in 2007 as part of the duo "Merrillthaocracy" with Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards. After that, in 2008, she released an album titled We Brave Bee Stings and All on the Kill Rock Stars label, which Tucker Martine had produced. She performed a duo with Zach Rogue of Rogue Wave at the 'Revenge of the Book Eaters' benefit performance in New York City in 2008.
Thao embarked on a solo 2009 Hotel Cafe Tour of the United States. On the June 2009 CD The Thao and Justin Power Sessions, she and fellow label mates The Portland Cello Project and Justin Power teamed to record covers of songs by Nguyen and Power. Nguyen settled in San Francisco sometime in the late aughts. She started volunteering with groups like the California Coalition for Women Prisoners, a nonprofit, and other outreach initiatives to meet new people and find her place in her new town over the next few years.
