Texas Playboys Information
Texas Playboys is an American band that was founded by James Robert Wills (March 6, 1905 – May 13, 1975) in 1934. Will founded the band along with rhythm guitarist June Whalin, Tommy Duncan on piano and vocals, Kermit Whalin on steel guitar and bass, and tenor banjoist Johnnie Lee Wills. The group used to play on Tulsa, Oklahoma's radio station KVOO regularly. The band also added Leon McAuliffe on steel guitar, drummer Smokey Dacus, pianist Al Stricklin, and a horn section that expanded the sound of the band.
Texas Playboys found national popularity into the 1940s with their hits, including "New San Antonio Rose," "Smoke On The Water," "Steel Guitar Rag," "Stars And Stripes On Iwo Jima," and "New Spanish Two Step." The band recorded with several publishers and companies, including Okeh, Columbia, Vocalion, and MGM. The group released two top 10 hits in 1950, entitled "Ida Red Likes the Boogie" and "Faded Love." "Ida Red" was the recording by the group that served as a model for Chuck Berry's version of the song "Maybellene" decades later.
In 1940, the discography "New San Antonio Rose" successfully sold a million records and became the signature song of The Texas Playboys.
